When you are having a problem with your device, you’ve most likely read or have been told to Unplug the device, wait for 10 seconds & plug it back in. Most times that is all that it takes to fix the problem. So what exactly does unplugging do, and why does it work?

Forced Reboot

  • Unplugging often works as many devices such as Internet Modems, Streaming Boxes, TVs and so on have small computers built into them. By unplugging and putting them back in, it forces that small inner computer to restart, clearing any temporary software problems.

  • These small computers run using their firmware which controls their behaviour. Sometimes there might be unexpected bugs, causing the problem. Restarting the device forces the internal computer to reboot, allowing the software to restart.

Temporary Fix

  • Though restarting by unplugging can work for most situations, it is actually a temporary fix. This won’t necessarily resolve the underlying problem that is causing the issue in the first place.

  • If possible, you should try to update the device to the latest software version.

  • Should the issue still occur, you might want to get in contact with the devices manufacturer department, so that they can assist.
